Getting homeowner’s insurance coverage for a storm damage claim is already difficult, but it can become nearly impossible if your insurance company is acting in bad faith. While there’s no way to know for sure how you will be treated by your insurance company, there are steps you can take to improve the likelihood that you will be treated fairly.

Below, you can find our list of the best and worst-rated homeowner’s insurance companies. You can use this information to make an informed decision when it's time to choose a homeowner’s insurance provider.

The Best and Worst Homeowner’s Insurance Companies 2023

J.D. Power conducts an annual survey monitoring the performance of insurance providers in the U.S. The rankings are determined based on five factors: settlements, claims servicing, FNOL, estimation process, and repair process. The rankings are reported as a score out of 1000, with 874 being the industry average. This year, the top ten insurance providers for property claims were ranked as follows:

  1. Erie Insurance — 912

  2. Amica — 903

  3. Nationwide — 884

  4. The Hartford — 883

  5. Chubb, tied with State Farm — 880

  6. American Family — 75

  7. Liberty Mutual — 870

  8. Allstate — 868

  9. Travelers — 867

  10. CSAA Insurance Group — 867

This year, Erie ranked in first place for both overall satisfaction and property claims satisfaction. Last year, Amica held the top spots. The bottom five spots for property claims satisfaction were held by the following companies:

  1. Safeco — 857

  2. Auto-Owners — 853

  3. Progressive — 851

  4. Automobile Club of Southern California — 842

  5. Homesite — 844

Homesite landed in the bottom spot for insurance providers on both lists. According to J.D. Power, the top-ranked providers were able to limit the amount of information their policyholders needed to get from the company, while lower-ranked companies had less streamlined operations.
